Welcome to Dorie Miller! We are so excited for a new school year. I am Dr. Christine A. Weiland, the Principal of Miller Elementary School and I want to personally extend my welcome. I am starting my third year as the principal of Miller and it is a joy and an honor to spend time with you and especially your students every day. Dorie Miller staff is also excited for this year to begin. We currently have on staff 16 classroom teachers, 7 of which are Master Teachers, 3 special education teachers and a full staff of specialists and support staff to ensure that students are getting individualized instruction and attention. In addition, students will participate in P.E., Music, and Art classes this year.
Miller has so much to celebrate! We are no longer an ‘Improvement Required’ campus and will be a dual language campus starting this school year. Students will continue to work in small group settings with content specialists in reading and math. In addition, students have their own iPads to work with every day and teachers have high tech Smart Boards that will allow them to provide amazing virtual experiences for your child. Fourth and fifth grade students will have their own Dell laptops. Students learn comfortably with our flexible furniture that allows them to sit and move about the room easily. Instructionally, we are offering several models of instruction to include dual language, enrichment, and extended learning clubs and groups. We also have a variety of family program activities through our Family Engagement department and Communities in Schools program that will assist parents in many ways.
We will be offering some very fun and unique opportunities for families to be become involved in school. Our Family Engagement department and our teachers will be teaming up to meet each and every one of you. In addition, we will be inviting parents to join us in academic goal setting for their child(ren). Our goal is to ensure that you feel that you are part of our team, making sure your child gets the instructional program he/she needs to be successful. Of course, we also plan to have a PTA and we hope you will become a part of that important group!
The regular school hours are 8:00-3:50. Students are welcome play on the playground or sit in the gym from 7:30 to 8:00 if they arrive on campus early. All students will meet in the gym when it is raining or very cold outside. There will be staff on duty at 7:30. In addition to the regular school day, every student will have the opportunity to participate in academic and enrichment clubs throughout the school year. Master Teachers will be having extended learning groups every day from 7:30-8:00 am. Students will also have the chance to participate in Enrichment activities in the afternoon. Every student will be able to get personalized attention while learning in fun and creative ways. Your teacher and our Extended Day Site Coordinator will work with you to determine what will work best for you and your child. We want every Miller Mariner to take advantage of our extended learning opportunities! We have even partnered with our after school program SRG to ensure that students who attend SRG will get extended learning every day and will have the chance to participate in clubs and groups too!
Parents have two choices for drop-off and pick-up from school. You may drop your student(s) off right by the playground or you may drop them off in the back circle. Either way there will be adults there to greet them starting at 7:30. Parents also have a choice at dismissal. You can drive through at the back circle or pick your child up at the playground. Please let your child’s teacher know your preference for dismissal so they know where to send them at 3:50. Again, there will be teachers at both dismissal stations.
We are looking forward to an awesome year at Dorie Miller Elementary. Our teachers, specialists and support staff are the best! You are always welcome at our school. We hope you will volunteer and participate in our activities! We want to form a partnership in learning with you so that your child(ren) will see that we are working together to ensure they are getting the best school experience ever!
