Howdy Howdy!

My name is Jimmy Bui and this will be my first year teaching at Luther Burbank High School in the Math Department. Born and raised in Plano Texas, I moved to Colorado for a bit before making my way down here to San Antonio.

Gaming is a big hobby of mine and so I hope to spark student interest in school and social experiences through board games, card games, and table top roleplaying games.

I look forward to meeting your child and working with them and their class to experience the wonder of math this year.

MATHia and More!

Hello families and students. This is our first weekly communication home through the school page, as we go on throughout the year, these posts may evolve.

The goal is to have at least one of these posts a week that has a general overview of the week and what our goals are. Other pop up posts throughout the week will be for specific details.

So let's get this started.

This is a B Week, meaning Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are on the B Schedule.

In week 6, we continue our work with exploring how systems of equations can be used to represent situations we come across in our day to day lives as well as introducing the math practice software, MATHia. I will be out of the classroom Thursday 9/22 through Monday 9/26, returning next Tuesday 9/27; expect the weekly post some time around Wednesday before the "Meet the Teacher" night.

MATHia is a great practice tool created by Carnegie Learning, from where our lesson curriculum also comes from, that provide a digital tutor that learns where you struggle and provides guiding messages as a teacher would. By being a digital tutor, students are able to get quality help without raising their hands. If students are still struggling, the system will tell me to go check on that student specifically to provide more personalized guidance.

With MATHia, we are now completing our average 2-week cycle. Carnegie Learning's intended design for learning is in 2 parts: Learn Together and Learn Individually. 60% of the time, we are learning together in small group explorations through the Texas Math Solution Lesson Materials. The other 40% of the time is individually with MATHia and small group pull outs that I lead. With our 2-week cycle, each class meets at most 5 times, meaning 3 days will be spent doing Learn Together and 2 days doing Learn Individual. Every now and then, we will have moments where we'll take on an extra day or so of MATHia to provide more algebraic foundation as we've had inconsistent math practice during the past 2 school years.

Some times we'll meet the new math concepts during the Learn Together with the group exploration and then continue to practice it with MATHia; and other times, students will have had exposure to the concept through MATHia and bring to the Learn Together a higher level of understanding.

We'll be using MATHia at minimum on Thursdays and Fridays of every week. I'm throwing around the idea of also having MATHia being the main activity on days where a substitute is teaching too; that way students have personalized practice grow as mathematicians with both the digital tutor that knows them and the math knowledge the substitute brings.

Anywho, this is already pretty long, hopefully future communications will be shorter. I hope to see y'all this Wednesday from 6-8 PM at Meet the Teacher!

Warm Regards,

Mr. Bui

Course Description

In this course students build on their work in Algebra I to broaden their understanding of functions and learn new functional relationships in mathematics.

Required Materials

  • ?Computer Daily (The school will provide a Chromebook)
  • ?Reliable Wi-Fi outside of school to access materials
  • ?Pencils/Pens Daily
  • ?Their choice for notetaking

    Grading Policy

  • The student’s semester grade will be based on the following:
    • Assignments are worth 60% and can include:
      • Homework
      • Classwork
      • Essays
      • Daily Participation
      • Student Efficacy and Responsibility
    • Assessments are worth 40% and can include:
      • Quizzes
      • Projects
      • Tests

    Academic Honesty

Students are expected to avoid committing plagiarism.

    What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is taking someone else’s work and using it as your own.

    Consequences Per Course

First Occurrence: Teacher will meet with the student to determine the reason for plagiarism. The student will have the opportunity to redo the assignment for full credit. The event will be logged as an academic intervention.

Second Occurrence: Teacher will meet with the student and guardians to determine the reason for plagiarism.  The student will write a letter or email to the classroom teacher documenting the incident and then can redo the assignment for full credit. The event will be logged as an academic intervention.

Third Occurrence: The student will earn a zero on the assignment. The teacher will refer the student to the AP as a disciplinary issue. The event will be logged as an academic intervention.

    Student Expectations

  • Check in with your teacher at least twice a week.
  • Check your grades at least once each week and contact your teacher with any questions.
  • Treat others the way THEY want to be treated. Take responsibility for learning how others want to be treated.
  • Be academically honest. Ask for help when you need it, and only turn in work that is yours and that you are proud of.
  • Set aside time each day to dedicate to schoolwork. If you fall behind, ask for HELP!
  • Return communications within 24 hours, or as soon as you can.
    • Let us know if your mode of communication changes, such as getting a new phone number.
