Spanish 3, 4 & 5 Syllabus

Course overview:  The purpose of this course is to prepare students to meet the requirements of Spanish III as determined by the State of Texas via TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills).  Throughout this course the student will continue developing vocabulary needed in order to communicate effectively in Spanish. Students will be expected to talk about present and past experiences in more detail, and compare and contrast places, etc.  The student will continue learning grammar structures and verb tenses enabling him to write more elaborated compositions. They will participate in longer oral presentations.  Diverse activities will be worked in class to allow the development of reading, speaking, writing, and listening skills in the targeted language. In addition to the development of basic skills in Spanish, the students will be exposed to information about a variety of Spanish speaking countries and their culture to enhance the students’ knowledge in this area.

 

Course Objectives (TEKS §114.23): At the end of the Intermediate progress level, (Spanish III) the student will be able to:

  • Participate in simple face-to-face communication.
  • Create statements and questions to communicate independently when speaking and writing.
  • Understand main ideas and some details of materials on familiar topics when listening and reading.
  • Understand simple statements and question when listening and reading.
  • Meet limited practical and social writing needs.
  • Use knowledge of the culture in the development of communication skills.
  • Use knowledge of the components of language, including grammar, to increase accuracy of expression.
  • Cope successfully in straightforward social and survival situations.

 

Text book: Autentico 3 Tres (Pearson Inc., 2018) 

 

Supplies: 1 subject Spiral/Journal notebook (wide, NOT college ruled), pens (blue or black) or pencils, notebook paper, Spanish dictionary (recommended, not mandatory)

 

Evaluation:

9 Week Grade   40% tests, quizzes, essays, and oral presentations

                                    60% daily class work and homework

 

Semester grade 85% 1st + 2nd 9week’s grade average

                              15% Semester Exam grade

                                   

Make-up work:  Students are expected to make-up all the missed assignments due to legitimate absences. It is the responsibility of the student to ask for missed assignment as soon as the student report back to class.  The students will be given two days to make-up for one missed assignment. For longer absences, the teacher will decide on the number of days to turn it in.

 

Tutoring: The teacher will be available for tutoring before school by appointment Mondays-Friday. This schedule is subject to change depending on meetings or other commitments.  In these cases a reschedule can be arranged on days not listed above.

 

Policies and Class Procedures: 

  • ?Students must follow conduct and attendance policies as stated in the SAISD Parent and Student Handbook.

     

  • ?You will enter the classroom with your supplies (notebook paper, spiral notebook, pen or pencil)

     

  • ?Un-tucked shirts and pants worn too low will be fixed outside the classroom. If you do not get if fixed before the tardy bell rings you will be tardy.

     

  • ?You will be assigned a seat, when the bell rings you will be seated.

     

  • ?When entering in the classroom, please, look for the warm-up activity indicated on the board. Then, take a notebook paper and complete it. Warm-up activities will be discussed/collected and points will be assigned.

     

  • ?Certain items will be collected immediately, for example: make-up, cell phones, iPODs, perfume, food, drinks, notes/letters/poems to friends/family, other teacher’s work, hair brushes, permanent markers, drawings, etc.

     

  • ?Everybody likes to be respected. Respect is earned, not imposed. You will treat everybody in class the way you would like to be treated.

     

    Homework or Assignments:

  • ?Please, write a heading to every paper turned in. Heading must include: Name with last name, date, teachers name correctly written (Mr. Pizarro), title of assignment, and class period. Incomplete headings will receive a deduction of 5 points.

     

  • ?No tagging of glyphic of any kind.Automatic zero for this infraction.

     

  • ?Write in blue or black pen, or pencil.

     

  • ?Work must be on time a due date will be assigned to all assignment, and homework will be due the next day of school after announced. If it is late, 10 points are deducted the first day, 20 the points the second and 30 points the third day. After the 3rd day a zero will be assigned to the missing assignment. Please remember that you have only one Spanish teacher, but your teacher has many students. You are accountable for any work you are missing.

 

Cultural Activities: Throughout the year, and according to the TEKS, the students will be able to participate in cultural activities during the Spanish course such as the Day of the Death, Independence of Mexico, and other countries, Columbus Day, Hispanic Month, etc. These activities are part of the curriculum; however the students will participate only if his/her behavior is satisfactory in the class. Also, please be aware that if for religious or other reasons parents don’t want the child to participate the teacher should be informed on time. In this case, the teacher will provide an alternate activity for the student.
