Welcome! My name is Ms. Fernández, and I am eager to support your student this year. Originally from Venezuela and raised in Kissimmee, FL, San Antonio is a new home for me. My ELA classes focus on developing strong literacy skills, and most importantly—molding critical thinkers, readers, writers, and leaders that will become problem solvers in our communities.
Prior to joining the Whittier team, I graduated from American University in Washington, D.C. with a B.A. in Political Science. During my time in D.C, I had the opportunity to serve in various roles including some in congress, non-profits, political consulting firms, and an education central district office. These experiences allow me to share with our students how our learning extends beyond the classroom, and onto the real world.
I know virtual learning can be difficult. Please reach out via email to connect and we will solve problems together. Please know that in addition to zoom sessions, I also upload Youtube tutorial video lessons on Canvas for your student in case they miss class or need additional support.
Parents, abuelas, friends, siblings, and tias are all critical to the learning process. The best way to enhance the learning happening in our classroom is by asking your student about what they are learning about in my class, making sure your student checks Canvas, and having them read 20 minutes daily at home.
