The Lanier High School volleyball team recently displayed how they play, and serve, with heart.
When coach Veronica Valdez and the team learned that their Sept. 6 opponent, Seguin High School, had lost a team member in a car crash over the summer, she wanted the Matadors to know that the Voks shared in their sorrow.
Valdez said at a previous school, her players had honored her grandfather’s memory after his passing by wearing shirts memorializing him and dedicating a game in his honor.
“I was overwhelmed when I saw my athletes wearing those shirts around school,” Valdez said. “I’ve never forgotten what my athletes and parents did for me that day.”
So when she heard about the passing of Chloe Belicek in Seguin, she said she felt compelled to do something similar.
“I knew her family and the Seguin community could use extra love and support as they are going through this painful time,” she said. “Words can’t heal grief, but I thought that if we honored Chloe in a way similar to what my athletes did for my grandfather, it could bring a bit of comfort to her family, teammates, and community.”
Valdez reached out to the team and their parents, and they created shirts honoring Chloe, which the Voks wore into the game hosted at Seguin. Before the game started, they let the Matadors know they wanted to dedicate the game to Chloe.
“It was truly touching to share this experience with the Seguin players. I can only begin to understand the challenges they are facing,” senior Ilanna Martinez said. “I’m really happy we could bring some joy to them, even though we wish we could have done even more. As athletes, it’s a privilege to use our platform to unite communities from different parts of the city. We want them to know that while we can only imagine their struggles, we stand with them all the way from the West side.”

Cuando la entrenadora Verónica Valdez y el equipo se enteraron de que su rival del 6 de septiembre, Seguin High School, había perdido a un miembro del equipo en un accidente de coche durante el verano, quiso que los Matadors supieran que los Voks compartían su dolor.
Valdez dijo que en una escuela anterior, sus jugadores habían honrado la memoria de su abuelo tras su fallecimiento llevando camisetas que lo recordaban y dedicando un partido en su honor.
"Me sentí abrumada cuando vi a mis atletas llevando esas camisetas por la escuela, dijo Valdez. "Nunca he olvidado lo que mis atletas y mis padres hicieron por mí aquel día".
Por eso, cuando se enteró del fallecimiento de Chloe Belicek en Seguin, dijo que se sintió obligada a hacer algo parecido.
"Sabía que su familia y la comunidad de Seguin necesitaban más solidaridad y apoyo en estos momentos tan dolorosos", afirmó. "Las palabras no pueden curar el dolor, pero pensé que si honrábamos a Chloe de una forma similar a la que mis atletas hicieron por mi abuelo, podría aportar un poco de consuelo a su familia, a sus compañeros de equipo y a la comunidad".
Valdez se puso en contacto con el equipo y sus padres, y crearon camisetas en honor a Chloe, que los Voks lucieron en el partido que se celebró en Seguin. Antes de que empezara el partido, hicieron saber a los Matadors que querían dedicar el partido a Chloe.
"Ha sido conmovedor compartir esta experiencia con las jugadoras de Seguin. Sólo puedo empezar a comprender los retos a los que se enfrentan", declaró Ilanna Martínez, de último año de la preparatoria. "Estoy feliz de haber podido darles alegría, aunque nos hubiera gustado hacer más. Como atletas, es un privilegio utilizar nuestra plataforma para unir a comunidades de distintas partes de la ciudad. Queremos que sepan que, aunque sólo podemos imaginar sus dificultades, estamos con ellos desde el lado Oeste".
