St. Philip's Early College High School celebrated its first 10 years serving students Friday, Aug. 16 with a ribbon cutting on the newly remodeled Bowden Legacy Building.
Â
The event was part of the Legacy Day Celebration at St. Philip’s College, which celebrates the legacy of college founder Saint Artemisia Bowden.Â
Â
“St. Artemisia Bowden left a legacy — footprints, and we are to walk in her footprints at this time,” Principal Ashlyn Barrientes said. “I am honored to be a part of this legacy and supporting the mission of Artemisia Bowden of educating underrepresented students in higher education.”
Â
The early college high school opened in August 2014 on the St. Philip’s College campus as the Alamo College District’s second early college campus. The school provides students the opportunity to earn up to 60 hours of college credit, an associate degree, or certificates in high-demand industries — at the same time as they work toward their high school diplomas. Â
Â
"We run a very rigorous program,” Barrientes said. “Our teachers work hard. Our students work hard, and they walk across that stage before they even graduate from high school with their degrees.”
Â
The school operates out of the now-rededicated Bowden Legacy Building, one of the original buildings of the St. Philip’s campus.Â
Â
“It is very promising that [the building] is home to St. Philip’s Early College High School because in and of itself what it means is being able to ensure that we do achieve that moonshot of ending intergenerational poverty through education and training,” Alamo Colleges Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores said.Â
Â
The school, which recently received a U.S. News and World Report Top High Schools badge, offers two degrees — an Associate of Arts and an Associate of Applied Science, along with certifications in the fields of information technology automotive technology and nursing, allowing students to walk the college stage in early May each year.
Â
“When I walk into a college classroom everything changes for me,” junior Bella Gonzalez said. "I have to put myself on a higher standard.”
