Catalina Williams knew since she was 7 years old that she wanted to be a teacher — so much so that she practiced with her childhood neighbors.
“I just knew it in my heart,” Williams said. “My dad placed a slab of wood on the side of the house and gave me some sheetrock to use as chalk. I had my own classroom outside. The neighborhood kids came over, and I was their teacher.”
Williams, a first grade teacher at Graebner Elementary, was born in Eagle Pass, Texas, but raised in San Antonio. She attended J. T. Brackenridge Elementary, then Cooper Middle School, and Sidney Lanier High School.
She received scholarships to attend San Antonio College and Our Lady of the Lake University, graduating with her education and math degree in 1990. It was then she got hired at Graebner.
“I promised myself that I would teach for SAISD,” Williams said. “I loved my teachers in SAISD.”
It’s at Graebner where she has remained for 34 years. She started as the school’s mathematics specialist, and has also taught fifth, third, second and first grades, finding joys in each.
“At the end of the year, when first graders are reading to you, and they are writing without asking you how to spell everything, it is so rewarding,” Williams said. “You cry so many happy tears because it is just amazing what the children can do, and you had a lot to do with it.”
Williams almost retired last year, but in her heart, she said, she just wasn’t quite ready. To the cheers of her Graebner Griffin family, she returned for year 35.

Catalina Williams sabía desde los 7 años que quería ser maestra, tanto que practicaba con sus vecinos de la infancia.
"Simplemente lo sabía en mi corazón", dijo Williams. "Mi papá colocó una tabla de madera en un lado de la casa y me dio un poco de yeso para usarlo como tiza. Tenía mi propio salón de clases afuera. Los niños del vecindario venían a la casa, y yo era su maestra”.
Williams, maestra de primer grado en Graebner Elementary, nació en Eagle Pass, Texas, pero se crio en San Antonio. Asistió a J. T. Brackenridge Elementary, luego a Cooper Middle School y por último a Sidney Lanier High School.
Recibió becas para asistir a San Antonio College y a Our Lady of the Lake, graduándose con su licenciatura en educación y matemáticas en 1990. Fue entonces cuando fue contratada en Graebner.
“Me hice la promesa de enseñar para SAISD”, dijo Williams. “Amaba a mis maestros de SAISD”.
Y es en Graebner donde ha permanecido durante 34 años. Comenzó como especialista de matemáticas de la escuela, y ha enseñado en quinto, tercero, segundo y primer grado, encontrando alegrías en cada grado.
“Al final del año, cuando los estudiantes de primer grado te leen y escriben sin preguntarte cómo se escribe cada palabra, es muy gratificante”, dijo Williams. “Lloras tantas lágrimas de felicidad porque es increíble lo que los niños pueden hacer, y tuviste mucho que ver con eso”.
Williams estuvo a punto de jubilarse el año pasado, pero en su corazón, dijo, aún no estaba preparada. Para regocijo de su familia de Graebner, regresó para cumplir su año 35.
