The district’s newest National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) were recognized at a formal pinning ceremony Feb. 7 at the Texas National Board Coalition for Teaching conference at Education Service Center-Region 20.

The four teachers — Grecia Aguilera at Madison Elementary, Nathan Busse at Jefferson High School, Lucel Gaspan-Frost at Beacon Hill Primary and Kate Jones-Waddell at the Advanced Learning Academy — now help comprise 15 total educators in San Antonio ISD that currently possess this certification, the highest a teacher may obtain.

“We are inspired by our phenomenal SAISD teachers: their skill, their passion, and their unwavering belief in what our students will achieve. National Board Certification shows what the district already knows to be true: SAISD has some of the best educators in the nation,” said Dr. James Harrell, SAISD Chief Human Capital Management Officer. “When educators choose to grow within our SAISD familia, they strengthen not only their own practice but the entire district. Investing in their development is one of the most powerful ways we can retain extraordinary talent.”

The certification culminates years of hard work as these educators completed a lengthy process requiring them to reflect in four areas of their practice: content knowledge, differentiated instruction, teaching practice and learning environment, and their role as an effective and reflective practitioner, creating videos and written analyses of the instructional choices they make in their classrooms.

“Pursuing your NBCT is a lot of work, but it is so worth it,” Jones-Waddell said. “Be prepared for long hours, moments of frustration, and times when things don't go right on the first try. NBCT is a process of growth and reflection, and the practices that I have developed through my candidate process and now utilize in my classroom everyday ultimately benefit my students.”

The reflection is a deliberate part of the process, with good purpose, and leads not only to higher teacher performance but also student performance. The National Board for Professional Teaching standards reports that students learning from National Board Certified Teachers have higher learning outcomes. In fact, 90% of the teachers who are pursuing NBCT through the district had students who demonstrated measurable academic growth. This is because teachers pursuing the National Board Certification must approach the rigorous process and challenging study with passion and a growth mindset, embracing the standards—closely aligned with the TTESS rubric—as best practices they are already implementing to serve their students effectively.

“NBCT takes you through such a reflective process as an educator; the strategies I have grown and units that I created as a NBCT candidate I am still using and improving now,” Jones-Waddell added. “My students benefit from me going through this process and utilizing the work I did for NBCT in the classroom.”

In addition to the increase in student achievement, there are benefits to certified teachers – they automatically earn a Recognized designation level assigned under the Texas Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA). Additionally, they become part of an elite group nationwide, as only 4% of teachers in the nation achieve this milestone.

“It's a confidence booster,” Busse said. “I feel like I've done something that few attempt and even fewer successfully complete. I feel part of a group of teachers across the country who are passionate, hard-working and, in many ways, stubbornly willful about making deadlines and keeping them.”

The teachers who complete the process are able to better articulate the work they are doing for their students every day.

“National Board allowed me to showcase how I differentiate instruction, how I read data as a teacher and campus collaborator, the teaching methods I use for large and small groups as well as prove my content knowledge of my certification area with a lengthy test,” Aguilera said.

It also helps with retention — 97% of SAISD’s NBCT cohort have remained with the district.

“Achieving NBCT gave me the affirmation that I am contributing towards something good for my students and in education,” Gaspan-Frost said. “It is not easy, but it is rewarding. If you ever feel like you are in a crossroads where you question yourself as an educator and whether you should stay, do it and lean into your support group. Taking one step at a time will help clear your self-doubt and the results will help you reflect on your craft to change for the better.”

To support teacher development and to recruit, retain, recognize and reward highly effective teachers, the district launched a pilot cohort program in 2021-2022 with the support of the SAISD Foundation to help teachers with the arduous submission process. In 2022, bolstered by the support of the Charles Butt Foundation through the SAISD Foundation, the district was able to hire a coordinator for the NBCT program, to coordinate targeted professional development and mentorships, and submission of materials and fees for applicants. Candidates work with the coordinator as they work through the certification requirements as a cohort over a two-year period.

“I want to thank SAISD Foundation and HEB's Charles Butt Foundation for supporting educators through their NBCT journey and beyond,” Gaspan-Frost added. “Having community partners like them make us educators feel like we are not alone in our advocacy for our children.”

Teachers who participate in the cohort have the benefit of meeting monthly with their peers and getting feedback on their materials before they are submitted. They receive professional development from other accomplished NBCTs, as well as 1 to 1 coaching on their materials.

“If you are passionate about teaching and would like to improve your craft, I encourage you to seek National Board Certification,” Aguilera said. “It will help you evaluate and improve practices to make sure they are targeted and effective.”

Los nuevos maestros del distrito certificados por la Junta Nacional (NBCT) fueron reconocidos en una ceremonia formal el 7 de febrero en la conferencia «Texas National Board Coalition for Teaching» en el Centro de Servicios Educativos de la Región 20.

Los cuatro maestros, Grecia Aguilera, de Madison Elementary; Nathan Busse, de Jefferson High School; Lucel Gaspan-Frost, de Beacon Hill Primary, y Kate Jones-Waddell, de Advanced Learning Academy, se suman ahora a los 15 educadores de San Antonio ISD que actualmente poseen esta certificación, la más alta que puede obtener un maestro.

«Nos inspiran nuestros fenomenales maestros de SAISD: su habilidad, su pasión y su inquebrantable fe en lo que nuestros estudiantes pueden lograr. La certificación de la Junta Nacional demuestra lo que el distrito ya sabe que es cierto: «SAISD cuenta con algunos de los mejores educadores del país», afirmó el Dr. James Harrell, director de Gestión de Capital Humano de SAISD. «Cuando los educadores deciden crecer dentro de nuestra familia de SAISD, fortalecen no solo su propia práctica, sino todo el distrito. La certificación culmina años de arduo trabajo ya que estos educadores completaron un largo proceso que les exigió reflexionar en cuatro áreas de su práctica: conocimiento académico, instrucción diferenciada, práctica docente y entorno educativo, y su papel como profesionales eficaces y reflexivos, creando vídeos y análisis escritos de las decisiones de instrucción que adoptan en sus salones.

«Obtener la certificación NBCT requiere mucho trabajo, pero vale mucho la pena», afirmó Jones-Waddell. «Prepárate para largas jornadas, momentos de frustración y ocasiones en las que las cosas no salgan bien a la primera. La NBCT es un proceso de crecimiento y reflexión, y las prácticas que he desarrollado a lo largo de mi proceso como candidata y que ahora utilizo a diario en mi salón benefician en última instancia a mis estudiantes».

‌La reflexión es una parte deliberada del proceso, con un buen propósito, y conduce no sólo a un mayor desempeño de los docentes sino también de los estudiantes. La Junta Nacional para las Normas Profesionales en la Enseñanza informa que los estudiantes que aprenden de maestros certificados por la Junta Nacional tienen mejores resultados de aprendizaje. De hecho, el 90 % de los maestros que están cursando la NBCT a través del distrito tenían estudiantes que demostraron un crecimiento académico medible. Esto se debe a que los maestros que obtienen la certificación de la Junta Nacional abordan el riguroso proceso y el desafiante estudio con pasión y una mentalidad de crecimiento, adoptando los estándares, estrechamente alineados con la rúbrica TTESS, siendo las mejores prácticas, ya están implementando para servir a sus estudiantes con eficacia.

«La NBCT te lleva a través de un proceso de reflexión como educadora; las estrategias que he desarrollado y las unidades que he creado como candidata de la NBCT sigo utilizándolas y mejorándolas ahora», añadió Jones-Waddell. «Mis estudiantes se han beneficiado de este proceso y del uso del trabajo en el salón que realicé para la NBCT».

Además del aumento en el rendimiento estudiantil, existen beneficios para los maestros certificados; automáticamente obtienen el nivel de designación «Recognized» asignado por Texas Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA). También pasan a formar parte de un grupo de élite a nivel nacional, ya que sólo el 4% de los docentes del país logran esta meta.

«Es un refuerzo de confianza», dijo Busse. «Siento que he hecho algo que pocos intentan y aún menos logran completar con éxito. Me siento parte de un grupo de maestros de todo el país que son apasionados, trabajadores y, en muchos sentidos, obstinadamente decididos a cumplir los plazos y mantenerlos».

Los maestros que completan el proceso son capaces de expresar mejor el trabajo que realizan cada día con sus estudiantes.

«La Junta Nacional me permitió mostrar cómo diferencio la enseñanza, cómo interpreto los datos como maestra y colaboradora del campus, los métodos de enseñanza que utilizo para grupos grandes y pequeños, así como demostrar mis conocimientos sobre el contenido de mi área de certificación con una prueba exhaustiva», afirmó Aguilera.

También contribuye a la retención: el 97 % de los miembros del grupo de NBCT de SAISD han permanecido en el distrito.

«Obtener la certificación NBCT me ha confirmado que estoy contribuyendo a algo bueno para mis estudiantes y para la educación», afirmó Gaspan-Frost. «No es fácil, pero es gratificante. Si alguna vez te sientes en una encrucijada en la que te cuestionas tu papel como educador y si debes seguir adelante, hazlo y recurre a tu grupo de apoyo. Dar un paso a la vez te ayudará a despejar tus dudas y los resultados te ayudarán a reflexionar sobre tu oficio para cambiarlo a mejor».

Para apoyar el desarrollo docente y para contratar, retener, reconocer y recompensar a los docentes altamente eficaces, el distrito lanzó un programa piloto de cohortes en 2021-2022 con el apoyo de la Fundación SAISD para ayudar a los maestros con el arduo proceso. En 2022, reforzado con el apoyo de la Fundación Charles Butt a través de la Fundación SAISD, el distrito pudo contratar un coordinador para el programa NBCT, para coordinar el desarrollo profesional específico, las tutorías y la presentación de materiales y tarifas para los solicitantes. Los candidatos trabajan con el coordinador a medida que resuelven los requisitos de certificación como grupo a lo largo de un período de dos años.

«Quiero dar las gracias a la Fundación SAISD y a la Fundación Charles Butt de HEB por apoyar a los educadores a lo largo de su trayectoria hacia la certificación NBCT y más allá», añadió Gaspan-Frost. «Contar con socios comunitarios como ellos nos hace sentir a los educadores que no estamos solos en nuestra labor de abogar por los niños».

‌Los maestros que eligen participar en la cohorte tienen el beneficio de reunirse mensualmente con sus compañeros y recibir comentarios sobre sus materiales antes de enviarlos. Reciben formación profesional de otros NBCT con amplia experiencia, así como asesoramiento personalizado sobre sus materiales.

«Si te apasiona la enseñanza y te gustaría mejorar tus habilidades, te animo a que obtengas la Certificación de la Junta Nacional», dijo Aguilera. «Le ayudará a evaluar y mejorar las prácticas para asegurarse de que sean específicas y eficaces».
