“I get to say, I married the prom queen.” ~ Andy Campos

It’s a love story that started over a bag of crunchy Cheetos and a cup of tea.

In 1992, football player Andy Campos and band and color guard student Lydia Campos first met as sophomores in Ms. Annette Castillo’s English class at Brackenridge High School. Lydia caught Andy’s attention when she would walk into class with her snack in hand.

“I would say give me a drink. Give me some Cheetos. And she finally gave in and she shared,” said Andy with a big smile.

Lydia remembers it clearly too.

“I still share my food with him,” grinned Lydia.

In January, the high school sweethearts celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary.

SAISD is a common thread throughout their lives and their love story. The couple both attended SAISD since elementary school. And so have their five children.

Today, both Andy and Lydia are long-time employees of SAISD. Andy started as a custodian in 1997 for the district. He furthered his education to become a teacher and the head football coach at the Young Men’s Leadership Academy. Lydia joined SAISD in 2006 in the clerical field. Currently, she is the front desk clerk at the Advanced Learning Academy.

“We have spent most of our lives in these SAISD buildings. It’s our livelihood,” said Andy. “We have a strong loyalty to the district.”

And when they think back to high school where they first formed a bond, they always point to Ms. Castillo’s English class. But they do admit, their biggest moment came their senior year when their classmates voted them Prom King and Queen.

“We were already dating so it made prom even more special,” said Lydia.

“It might have been a sign,” said Andy. “It was meant to be, I guess. I get to say I married the prom queen.”

Es una historia de amor que comenzó con una bolsa de Cheetos crujientes y un té.

En 1992, el jugador de fútbol americano Andy Campos y la estudiante de banda y guardia de color Lydia Campos se conocieron en el décimo grado en la clase de inglés de la Srta. Annette Castillo en Brackenridge High School. Lydia atrajo la atención de Andy cuando entraba a clase con su aperitivo en la mano.

«Le decía que me diera de algo de tomar. Que me dieron unos Cheetos. Y finalmente cedió y me compartió», dijo Andy con una gran sonrisa.

Lydia también lo recuerda claramente.

«Sigo compartiendo mi comida con él», sonrió Lydia.

En enero, la pareja que se enamoró en preparatoria celebró su 29º aniversario de boda.

SAISD es un denominador común a lo largo de sus vidas y su historia de amor. La pareja asistió a SAISD desde la primaria. Y también sus cinco hijos.

Hoy en día, tanto Andy como Lydia son empleados de larga trayectoria en SAISD. Andy comenzó a trabajar como conserje en 1997 para el distrito. Continuó su formación para convertirse en maestro y entrenador principal de fútbol americano en Young Men’s Leadership Academy. Lydia se incorporó a SAISD en 2006 en el ámbito administrativo. Actualmente, es recepcionista en Advanced Learning Academy.

«Hemos pasado la mayor parte de nuestras vidas en estos edificios de SAISD. Es nuestro sustento», dijo Andy. «Tenemos una gran lealtad hacia el distrito».

Y cuando recuerdan la preparatoria, donde se forjó su relación, siempre mencionan la clase de inglés de la Srta. Castillo. Pero admiten que su momento más importante llegó en su último año, cuando sus compañeros de clase los eligieron como el rey y la reina del baile.

«Ya estábamos saliendo juntos, así que eso hizo que el baile de graduación fuera aún más especial», dijo Lydia.

«Quizás fue una señal», dijo Andy. «Supongo que estaba destinado a ser así. Puedo decir que me casé con la reina del baile».

Y, como se suele decir, el resto es historia. ¡Feliz día de San Valentín!
