Silence fell over the multipurpose rooms at Sam Houston High School on Saturday, Feb. 7, broken only by the sharp clack of plastic pieces moving across vinyl boards. This intensity marked the 4th Annual Black History Month Chess Tournament. This is the second of three chess tournaments in the annual Chess Tournament Series, which are hosted by SAISD's Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Department.
What began as a simple initiative in 2017, bolstered by an SAISD Foundation grant, to provide an intellectual outlet has grown into a highly anticipated tradition. Over the course of the school year, the GATE Department organizes three distinct tournaments: Día de los Muertos (October), Black History Month (February), and Chess Without Borders (April/May), providing students with a dedicated arena to test their logic, patience, and resilience.
"These tournaments are about much more than winning a trophy," said Mirinda Coleman, GATE Department Director. "They provide a unique space for our students to practice executive functioning skills. We are seeing students learn to manage time pressure, calculate risk, and handle setbacks with grace. The GATE Department is thrilled to facilitate this kind of real-world cognitive training."
This chess tournament saw participation from over 200 students in grades K-12, featuring talent from nine school districts and 29 different campuses—including 19 of our very own SAISD schools! The grueling 5-round Swiss tournament is structured to challenge students not just to play, but to study the game. Many participants spend weeks between events analyzing famous matches and refining their openings.
"It was really challenging because you have to think three or four moves ahead," said Cheri Tondre, Chess Tournament Director and GATE Instructional Specialist. "The best part is seeing these students grow and refine their chess skills."

El Departamento de Alumnos Talentosos y Sobresalientes cultiva mentes estratégicas con una serie de torneos de ajedrez anuales
El silencio se apoderó de las salas multiusos de Sam Houston High School el sábado 7 de febrero, interrumpido únicamente por el sonido firme de las piezas de plástico al deslizarse por los tableros de vinilo. Esta intensidad marcó el cuarto Torneo Anual de Ajedrez del Mes de la Historia Afroamericana. Este es el segundo de los tres torneos de ajedrez de la serie anual de torneos de ajedrez, organizados por el Departamento de Educación para Alumnos Talentosos y Sobresalientes (GATE) de SAISD.
Lo que comenzó como una simple iniciativa en 2017, impulsada por una subvención de la Fundación SAISD, con el fin de proporcionar una vía intelectual, se ha convertido en una tradición sumamente esperada. A lo largo del año escolar, el departamento GATE organiza tres torneos distintos: Día de los Muertos (octubre), Mes de la Historia Afroamericana (febrero) y Ajedrez sin Fronteras (abril/mayo), que proporcionan a los estudiantes un espacio dedicado a poner a prueba su lógica, paciencia y resiliencia.
«Estos torneos son mucho más que ganar un trofeo», afirmó Mirinda Coleman, directora del departamento GATE. «Ofrecen un espacio único para que nuestros alumnos practiquen habilidades de funcionamiento ejecutivo. Estamos viendo cómo los alumnos aprenden a manejar la presión del tiempo, calcular los riesgos y manejar los contratiempos con elegancia. El departamento GATE está encantado de facilitar este tipo de formación cognitiva basada en el mundo real».
Este torneo de ajedrez contó con la participación de más de 200 estudiantes desde kínder hasta preparatoria con talentos procedentes de nueve distritos escolares y 29 escuelas diferentes ¡entre las que se incluyen 19 de nuestras propias escuelas del SAISD! El exhaustivo torneo suizo de 5 rondas está estructurado para desafiar a los estudiantes no solo a jugar, sino también a estudiar el juego. Muchos participantes pasan semanas entre eventos analizando partidas famosas y perfeccionando sus aperturas.
«Fue todo un reto porque hay que pensar tres o cuatro jugadas por adelantado», afirmó Cheri Tondre, directora del torneo de ajedrez y especialista de instrucción de GATE. «Lo mejor es ver cómo estos alumnos crecen y perfeccionan sus habilidades en el ajedrez».
