Family and Hawthorne Academy are inseparable for Angelita Ramos. The veteran kindergarten educator has been teaching at the Pearl-area academy for 18 years, but her family lineage there goes back much farther than that.
Her parents met in an SAISD elementary school and also attended Hawthorne Junior High from 1969 to 1972, beginning a long line of her family walking through the halls of the 1920s building.
While the family ties are strong, it was one of her own teachers at Hawthorne, then an elementary school, that inspired her own calling to teach.
“I had the best third grade teacher here at Hawthorne, Ms. Thelma Celestino,” Ramos said. “She was amazing. She loved everybody, no matter family situations. I remember clearly all the love she gave to us, even more than academics. She was everything I wanted to be.”
And just like that – by the loving influence of one teacher – a young Ramos, who had previously considered a career as a judge, decided to pursue her own career in education.
After earning her bachelor’s degree at the University of Texas in Austin, she returned to San Antonio.
She first worked at the daycare center at USAA, before a connection through Ms. Celestino, who had since become a principal, allowed her to interview for a position at Hawthorne. She has remained at Hawthorne for the last 18 years, 17 of those in kindergarten.
Now a TEA designated Exemplary teacher, which earns her a stipend on top of her salary, Ramos loves witnessing, over and over, the great academic and social gains that students make in one of their first years in school.
“I love seeing my students grow socially with each other because plenty of them have not been in school before,” Ramos said. “They’re sponges. They catch on to everything. So it’s really great to see the progress, the growth they’ve had from the beginning of the year, and they just keep on growing and growing.”
Ramos stays busy just like her young students. She assists with several of Hawthorne’s many extracurricular groups. She’s in charge of LEGO Club, an exclusive kindergarten club. She also sponsors cheerleading for Pre-K to third grade, and helps with Los Rayitos de Sol Folklórico group for Pre-K to third grade.
As a teacher, Ramos said she’s motivated by her administrators and colleagues.
“Our administration is amazing,” she said. “It starts from the top, and if you’re happy, you’re going to have a happy classroom. The teachers are amazing as well. Everybody works together. Every kid that walks into the building is all of ours.”
It was biological family that brought Ramos to Hawthorne as a student, but it’s her work family that keeps her there as a teacher, reflecting onto her own students the inspiration and encouragement she received from Ms. Celestino and other teachers she had.
“Hawthorne is my heart. My roots are deep,” Ramos said. “Being here and giving the attention and the love that I was given to these kids really matters.”

La Familia y Hawthorne Academy son inseparables para Angelita Ramos. Esta veterana educadora de jardín de infancia lleva 18 años impartiendo clases en la academia de la zona de Pearl, pero los orígenes de su familia en ese lugar se remontan mucho más atrás.
Sus padres se conocieron en una escuela primaria de SAISD y también asistieron a Hawthorne Junior High de 1969 a 1972, comenzando una larga fila de su familia caminando por los pasillos del edificio de la década de 1920.
Aunque los lazos familiares son fuertes, fue una de sus propias maestras en Hawthorne, entonces una escuela primaria, la que inspiró su propio llamado a enseñar.
“Tuve la mejor maestra de tercer grado aquí en Hawthorne, la Srta. Thelma Celestino”, dijo Ramos. “Ella fue increíble. Ella amaba a todos, sin importar situaciones familiares. Recuerdo claramente todo el amor que ella nos dio, incluso más que los estudios académicos. Ella era todo lo que quería ser”.
Y así, por la influencia amorosa de una maestra, una joven Ramos, que anteriormente había considerado una carrera como juez, decidió seguir su propia carrera en educación.
Después de obtener su licenciatura en la Universidad de Texas en Austin, regresó a San Antonio.
Primero trabajó en la guardería en la USAA, antes de que una conexión a través de la Srta. Celestino, quien desde entonces se había convertido en directora, le permitió entrevistarse para un puesto en Hawthorne. Ella ha permanecido en Hawthorne durante los últimos 18 años, 17 de ellos en kínder.
Ahora es una maestra ejemplar designada por TEA, que le gana un estipendio además de su salario, a Ramos le encanta presenciar, una y otra vez, los grandes logros académicos y sociales que los estudiantes obtienen en uno de sus primeros años de escuela.
“Me encanta ver a mis estudiantes crecer socialmente unos con otros porque muchos de ellos no han estado en la escuela antes”, dijo Ramos. “Son esponjas. Se dan cuenta de todo. Así que es realmente genial ver el progreso, el crecimiento que han tenido desde principios de año, y simplemente siguen creciendo y creciendo”.
Ramos permanece ocupada al igual que sus jóvenes estudiantes. Ella asiste con varios de los muchos grupos extracurriculares de Hawthorne. Está a cargo de LEGO Club, un club exclusivo de kínder. Ella también patrocina animadoras de Pre-K a tercer grado, y ayuda con el grupo de Los Rayitos de Sol Folklórico de Pre-K a tercer grado.
Como maestra, Ramos dijo que está motivada por sus administradores y colegas.
“Nuestra administración es increíble”, dijo. “Empieza desde arriba, y si tú estás feliz, vas a tener un aula feliz. Los profesores son increíbles también. Todos trabajan juntos. Cada niño que entra en el edificio es todo nuestro”.
Fue una familia biológica la que trajo a Ramos a Hawthorne como estudiante, pero es su familia de trabajo la que la mantiene allí como maestra, reflexionando sobre sus propios estudiantes la inspiración y el ánimo que recibió de la Srta. Celestino y otros maestros que tenía.
“Hawthorne es mi corazón. Mis raíces son profundas”, dijo Ramos. “Estar aquí y dar la atención y el amor que me dieron a estos niños realmente importa”.
