When ALA was founded, we set out these design principles as a set of universal goals, to support the high expectations we hold for students and ourselves. As we've grown as a school, we return to these time and time again, with each new course, initiative, and school year. Here are a few ways in which we put these principles into action:
1. Deep Learning
- Authenticity - Exhibitions, Field Trips, Community Involvement
- Integration - Project Based Learning Experiences, Enrichment Menus
- Tenacity - Genius Hour, Wonder Courses, Zorro Astuto Design Studio
- Reflection - Student Led Conferences, Project Based Learning, Daily Practice
2. Individuality
- Self-advocacy - Clubs Based on Interests and Passions, Problem Solving
- Voice - Project Based Learning, Speak Up Speak Out, Studios Courses
- Curiosity - Genius Hour, Zorro Astuto Design Studio, Culture of Exploration
3. Flexibile Design
- Individual Needs and Learning Styles - Enrichment Menus, Interactive Choice Boards
- Student Centered Grouping - Book Clubs, Classroom Environment, Small Group Instruction
- Multi-Age Experiences - Content Area Workshops, Village Grouping, Big Buddies, Studios
- Collaboration - Project Based Learning, Blended Learning, After School Clubs
4. Connection
- Personal and Social Awareness - Mindfulness, Collaboration, Restorative Practices
- Empathy with Meaningful Action - RULER, Morning Meetings, After School Clubs
- Community Partnerships - Public Exhibitions, Community Service, PTA
