Dr. Melissa Alcala
Dr. Melissa Alcala is principal of CAST Tech High School. Dr. Alcala has over 25 years of education experience, spanning grades Pre-K to 12. Her passion is creating small learning communities with a specialized focus, in order to personalize the learning experience for students and further develop their interests.
Most recently, Dr. Alcala worked with industry, higher-education institutions, and the SAISD school district to open CAST Tech High School in fall 2017, the first high-tech high school in San Antonio. The school is now a flagship campus that operates as a learning lab to other educators for innovative practices.
Prior to this role, Melissa served as the director of the NEISD STEM Academy. During her tenure, the school was designated a role-model campus by the Texas Education Agency. Prior experiences for Melissa include the creation of a dual-language program at Roan Forest Elementary, where the school was named one of the top three schools in the city during her tenure. She was Academic Dean of Instruction of Garner Middle School when the school earned National Blue Ribbon status for closing achievement gaps. She insists that it takes a collaborative, team-oriented approach involving all stakeholders to design meaningful educational programs for students.
Melissa graduated from UTSA with a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. She studied at Texas State University to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and a Masters’ degree in Education Administration.
