Dr. Moisés Reyes Ortiz
With over 34 years of service in education, Dr. Moisés Reyes Ortiz has become known as a life-long educator committed to developing PK-12 socially-just public schools. His tenure as a principal has earned him the moniker “The Fixer”, after successfully uniting the professional learning communities of the three middle schools and three high schools out of State and Federal unacceptable accountability status within one school year. Before being named as principal of Harry H. Rogers MS, Dr. Ortiz has previously served as an SAISD principal at Harris MS, Rhodes MS, Tafolla MS, Phoenix HS, Brackenridge HS and Lanier HS. He has also served the district as the Senior Director of Special Programs and Executive Director of Advanced Academics. While completing his doctoral studies, Dr. Ortiz was recruited by the Austin ISD to open the doors of Eastside Memorial HS in Austin, Texas.
His perspective on education is simple and stems from what his parents engrained in both him and his brother, “la educación abre puertas y reautoriza vidas” (Education opens doors and reauthorizes lives). He earned his B.A. and M.Ed. from Trinity University and completed his doctoral studies in Educational Policy and Planning from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Ortiz began serving as a mentor to principals launching their principalships beginning in 2004 and has served on multiple committees, advisory committees and sat on discussion panels for Trinity University, The University of Texas at Austin, the University of Texas at San Antonio, Region XX and the San Antonio Independent School District. In 2019, he was honored as a 2019 Columbia Teachers College Cahn Fellow after being recognized as a distinguished principal at the national level. He currently serves as a Cahn Fellow advisor to other principals undertaking the fellowship course of study.
