School History

Irving Academy is named after Washington Irving, a 19th century American author, who is most known for the classic tale, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Another notable short story he wrote was “Rip Van Winkle.” Irving is also credited with giving the nickname Gotham to New York City and came up with the phrase “the almighty dollar."

Irving is one of the eight original junior high schools the SAISD established in 1923, but because the building was not completed by the start of the school year, classes first met at Crockett Elementary, 2314 W. Commerce.

In January 1924 Irving Junior High School opened at 2215 Morales St.

In 1973 Irving moved to its present location on land which was the former site of Grant Elementary School and Dunbar Junior High School where one of its buildings is still in use.

In February of 2003, our campus was upgraded with our band and mariachi hall as part of the 1997 Facilities Expansion Bond Program, and in 2008 the school became an internal charter for music changing our name to Irving Academy.

We are also known as the Music Internal Charter School serving all of the 6-8 students and their parents living in the San Antonio Independent School District who are interested in outstanding band, mariachi, choir and art classes along with an excellent education.

Today we have transformed Irving Middle school into an in-district charter, Washington Irving Dual Language Academy. This academy specializes in developing English and Spanish curriculum to all students in the San Antonio area. The goal of dual language is to develop higher cognitive levels through the intentional development of on level Spanish and English instruction. The academy will serve Pre K 3rd – 8th students.

The administration, faculty, and staff of Irving are dedicated to providing a challenging and rigorous curriculum to all of our students in a nurturing and safe environment.
