Hello, my name is Francisco Miranda and I've been teaching for 25 years with SAISD, and have been at Lamar for 13 years. I teach P.E. and Health to grades Kindergarten through 6th. I am also the sponsor for our school's Safety Patrols. I thoroughly enjoy working with kids and try to develop and implement various games and activities, which allow for maximum participation and exercise. It brings me joy to see the excitement students have when they're successful in my classroom. I look forward to seeing the students develop and improve their skills as they learn the benefits of regular exercise, good nutrition, and developing good character traits.

What students learn and do in my classroom:

In grades K-2, we focus on activities/games that work on locomotor skills such as: walking, running, jumping, skipping, hopping, galloping, and also chasing, dodging, and fleeing.

In grades 3-5, we focus on team-related skills/games that include communication, problem solving, strategy, and team work.

In grade 6, we focus on team-related sports such as football, basketball, badminton, tennis, hockey, volleyball, and kickball. Activities in grade 6 prepare students for middle school athletics.

Expectation of Effort

In Physical Education, students are given a grade based on their participation and not on how well an activity can be done. If a student isn’t feeling well, he/she is allowed to sit out and watch the activity. Rules and expectations are always explained before every activity to ensure understanding. Students are encouraged to ask questions at any time for clarification. My assistant and I will demonstrate how activities and/or games are played. An effective practice when a student expresses doubt about how to play the game is that we partner with the student(s) for added encouragement to increase their confidence. Students are expected to try their best and give some effort even when they may dislike the activity being played.

Tiger Rules (these rules are posted in the gym)

1. Be nice!

2. Be safe!

3. Take care of equipment!

4. Work hard!

5. Play fair!

6. Have fun!

Successful students:

-participate daily

-give their best effort

-encourage others

-listen and follow instructions

-use meta-moment strategies

Bathroom Rules

Students are permitted to use the restroom at any time providing that they go one at a time to prevent horseplay. If a bathroom emergency is needed, that student may go without permission even if another student is in another stall.

Important reminders:

-wear proper foot attire (no sandals, boots, heels, open-toed shoes)

-Communicate illnesses and injuries immediately

-Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated

-Use equipment safely

-Be aware of your surroundings

Rewards
Students are recognized when they consistently follow the rules, give their best effort, exhibit good character and citizenship, or show improvement in their conduct/performance. This recognition may come in the form of verbal praise, being assigned a Helper Job, or given Tiger Bucks.

Consequences
2 warnings, 3rd results in consequence
Students who are not following the rules will receive a warning; this may be shown with a yellow card with a #1 on it. If the student continues, they are given a second warning (yellow card #2). If a student receives a third warning (red card #3) he/she will sit out from the activity. Any student who is in danger of hurting themselves or anyone else will be asked to sit down immediately without two warnings and go straight to a red card.

Students understand that when they sit out, they are to use that time to reflect on why they're sitting out. After 5 minutes, they are asked to rejoin the group provided that they can articulate why they were asked to sit out.  All students who have spent time in reflection are talked to about their behavior and are also reminded of the Gym rules/expectations.

If the behavior continues, I try my best to partner with parents to improve the student's focus in my classroom by reaching out to parents via phone, email or in person.
