Dear SPECHS Family,

Welcome!  I am excited to have been part of St. Philip's Early College High School. Physical Education classes are designed to practice and develop skills in activities that will help students maintain fitness throughout their life.

Early in the fall, student fitness levels will be assessed in the following areas: cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular strength and muscular endurance. From these assessments, we will develop a baseline in which we will use to set personal fitness goals. We will explore fitness activities designed to improve all areas of fitness. Our goal is, that by the end of the year, students will improve their scores on their baseline fitness tests through regular cardiovascular endurance training, muscular endurance training, and activities designed to increase current levels of fitness.

Students will be introduced to life-long activities designed to increase their likelihood of exercising in the future. They will understand the benefits that regular exercise can provide for a person's mental, physical, and social health.

The state learning standards for Physical Education will be assessed using a variety of measurement tools such as pre and post assessment of skills, unit tests, writing reflections, MVPA goal (moderate to vigorous physical activity) measured by pedometers, and other daily criteria. Please refer to the home page and syllabus in the designated CANVAS course for details pertaining to course content, objectives, expectation, procedures and grading policy.

Respectfully,

Coach Gomez - P.E. Teacher

Goodness...A heartfelt, “I miss you, all!” goes out to the wonderful students and families of our school community.  I am constantly thinking of you, your families, and I pray that you stay physically healthy and emotionally healthy. Since we are having to undergo a transition period with remote learning, I am providing some general information and links to short “brain breaks” and/or workout videos on this web page.  STUDENTS, please refer to your google classroom for lessons each week. Any wording in blue below is a link for which to click and get more information.

Since we are all at home, it is even more important to structure our time and some physical activity in our daily routines. Here are some benefits of exercise according to the CDC those of which we have already learned in Foundations of Personal Fitness:

  • Reduced anxiety and depression
  • Improved thinking, learning and judgment skills
  • Better sleep
  • Helps achieve or maintain a healthy weight
  • Boosts immunity
  • Strengthens bones and muscles
  • Improves flexibility, endurance, strength, and speed
  • Reduces the risk of many serious health conditions

You have each been equipped with the knowledge of the components of physical fitness; how to calculate your heart rate; target heart rate zone; and many exercises that can be done without the use of a gym! Now is the time to reach into your brain, retrieve those tools and get moving at home!
