Who We Are
Our Mission: to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
History:
Communities In Schools of San Antonio was established in 1985 by a group of concerned community leaders to address our city's high dropout rate. The founders’ vision was to provide a positive environment for at-risk students, insuring their access to educational opportunities, social services and support services. By developing positive self-esteem, confidence and respect, CIS-SA helps to realize the ultimate goal of young people graduating from high school and going on to reach their highest potential as successful citizens, positive contributors to the community and full participants in society.
Stay In School Program:
Communities In Schools truly believes that if we can keep one child in school and learning, we will have gone a long way to making the world a better place. During our upcoming 30 years of working in San Antonio schools we have done just that — helping thousands of children stay in school and achieve in life; changing the negative cycle of school failure, unemployment, poverty, abuse, broken lives and families. Our Stay in School program supports student achievement by providing services and resources to help improve academics, behavior and attendance.

Each CIS-SA program site offers six primary program components. At the beginning of each school year, our case managers interview school staff and community members to determine the needs of each school. A campus plan is then developed which includes services to meet the individual needs of the students and their families, and the priorities of each school principal. This campus plan determines the extent to which services are provided under each of the components. Our six components and examples of services provided are below:
-Supportive guidance and counseling (self-esteem guidance)
-Health and human services (Provide school supplies, uniforms etc.)
-Parental and family involvement (Attendance and home visits)
-Career awareness and employment (Career day)
-Enrichment programs (field day, art, karate etc.)
-Educational enhancement( Tutoring services)
