Overview

Woodlawn Academy is a community-centered school that believes in teaching the whole child. We offer a variety of extracurricular activities, including sports and clubs, in addition to a student-centered instructional approach that promotes inquiry and concept-based learning. We provide students with a unique education though the International Baccalaureate (IB) philosophy. As an IB World School for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP), we aim to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Our academics and extracurricular programs provide students with a well-rounded, whole-child education.

School History

First opened as Woodlawn Place in the rented Weimer business building at Zarzamora and Magnolia in 1924. The school's present building at 1717 W. Magnolia Avenue opened 1930.

Woodlawn Academy has a long and illustrious history of outstanding education. The classrooms at Woodlawn have grown politicians, writers, doctors, Ivy League graduates and many of the top students in the city. We have watched students move forward and achieve great success in career and academic pursuits including Former San Antonio Mayor Ed Garza and Current State Senator Letitcia Van de Putte. At Woodlawn, students not only focus on academic pursuits but are constantly engaged in the art of becoming better people. It is essential that all students build the foundation for a strong academic career that will last throughout their lifetime.

We also recognize the importance of building all facets of the child’s mind. Students have opportunities to apply their knowledge of core academic skills by competing in robotics competitions, district academic competitions and becoming a master gardener. Students can develop their creativity and personality by immersing themselves in theater and choir performances. They can challenge themselves physically through the Running Club or Spirit Team. Wherever there is interest, teachers strive to create extra learning opportunities for students.

Family life also is important to the Woodlawn community. Families are invited to participate in numerous after-school activities. Monthly Parent-Teacher Organization performances showcase student learning and often are accompanied by family nights to celebrate reading, writing, math, science, and history. Monthly Reading Nights allow families to visit the library together and spend time enjoying books. Parents are given many opportunities to volunteer and are welcomed into school for parent training classes, book fairs and numerous special events.

The Woodlawn staff is full of energetic, compassionate, dedicated and intelligent leaders who are determined to ensure all students succeed. Our teachers strive to be the top professionals in their field, attending extra workshops and conferences on their own time and throughout the summer to ensure Woodlawn students have the best learning experiences possible. The administration closely works with students and families to ensure that the school environment is safe, positive and focused on ensuring all students progress toward their academic goals.

Woodlawn Academy is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School offering the Middle Years Programme and the Primary Years Programme. An IB education is acclaimed worldwide because of its rigorous academic and personal standards, which prepare students for higher education. Woodlawn’s designation makes it the first school in Bexar County to be authorized to provide the IB Middle Years Programme and Primary Years Programme.
