School History
Many different names and grade levels have occupied what eventually would become Carroll Elementary during the 1990-91 school year. The site originally opened in 1942 as Jefferson Davis High School, and then was part of the W.W. White School District. A junior high school building was added in 1948. When that school district consolidated with the SAISD in 1950 the site became Sam Houston Junior-Senior High School.
In 1959 the higher grades moved to the new Sam Houston High School on East Houston Street. After the move the Davis name was restored to the Holmgreen campus. For 10 years the site was known as Jefferson Davis Elementary-Junior School, and operated under one principal. The elementary grades were phased out in 1969.
In the mid 1970s the campus became Davis Middle School when the SAISD discontinued the junior high system. In 1989 Davis Middle School moved to the former Portwood Junior High across the street from Sam Houston High School. During the 1989-90 school year the Holmgreen site became Ball Intermediate School, and was used to relieve overcrowding at Ball Elementary.
In the spring of 1990 school zones were revised throughout SAISD to equalize enrollment. Part of the revision included establishing an elementary school at the Holmgreen campus, which subsequently was named for longtime SAISD assistant athletic director the late Henry Carroll.
During the 2003-04 school year Carroll became a pre-kinder to 6 academy, later adding grades 7 and 8. During the 2004-05 Carroll was one of five East Side campuses that obtained internal charter school status with an emphasis on an increased alignment – or cohesion- of the curriculum for all grades and subjects. The school closed due to declining enrollment in June 2008
In 2009, SAISD began offering Head Start services through the district. Henry Carroll was re-opened, and now serves as an early childhood campus.
Since 2009, the campus has grown from proving preschool education to 3 and 4 year olds to including Kindergarten through 2nd Grade as of the 2020 - 2021 school year.
